As is so often the case with medical anecdotes, the following one begins with an emergency house call requested by telephone. You know: German general practioners must be available for those. It reached me from a just recently established shared apartement for senior citizens.

Two old ladies had moved together in a large apartment, as a protection alliance against the expected perils of old age, so to speak.

And now: Bang ! Mrs. N. had really fallen in her kitchen — one would hear nothing more from Mrs. N.’s rooms, but, I knew, the caller, Mrs. NN. was stone-deaf. The floor, however, was full of blood, she described, till the hallway — and whether I, perhaps ? after the consulting hours……………I was immediately on my way.

The door was open: Mrs. N. could already be heard in the hallway, whining indeed, but that’s a better sign than the suspected nothing. Wading through the red lake, bloody on soles and pants, sticky, disgusting, I then saw a large metal pot next to Mrs. N. — and also, finally, I understood the wailing : “My jelly, the beautiful raspberry jelly — just tripped!”

It went off without broken bones — and a very special luck: no burn by boiling raspberry jelly !
